This conference is intended to provide a forum for interchange on various algorithms, systems, sensors, and architectures for novel applications in optics and photonics in information processing. Original unpublished contributions reporting recent advances in analog and hybrid optical information systems and techniques are solicited. Photonics Integrated Circuits (PICs) are analogs to the computer microprocessor chip, poised to partner light-manipulating optical devices and transistor-based electronics for a vast array of modern applications in cloud computing, high-speed mobile wireless, smart sensing, augmented imaging, and quantum communications.
This chapter reviews methodologies for integrating silicon photonic interconnect technologies with computing systems, including implementation challenges associated with device characteristics. A fully functional co-integrated hardware–software system needs to encompass device functionality, control schema, and software logic seamlessly. Photonic systems - which can involve the interaction of a handful of photons with a handful of internal degrees of freedom like atomic states - provide a natural platform for consideration of noisy, low-power computing. This is a work in two parts. In Part I I investigate applications of photonic circuits for power-efficient computation.

This algorithm requires a quantum computer, a device that harnesses the massive parellism afforded by quantum superposition and entanglement of quantum bits (or qubits). Neuromorphic computing applies concepts extracted from neuroscience to develop devices shaped like neural systems and achieve brain-like capacity and efficiency. In this way, neuromorphic machines, able to learn from the surrounding environment to deduce abstract concepts and to make decisions, promise to start a technological revolution transforming our society and our life.
